Pride Triangles |
|
Everyone knows that the Nazis forced Jews to wear two yellow triangles forming a Star of David to show their "crime" against the Fatherland. It's not as well known that colored triangle patches denoted the "crime" of everyone in the concentration camps. For instance, Gypsies were forced to wear brown triangles, political prisoners wore red, habitual criminals wore green, emigrants wore blue, those deemed "asocial" wore black, and homosexual men had to wear pink. In more recent years, those pink triangles have become a symbol of Pride; a reminder of who we are, and what must never happen again. (Estimates of those executed for being homosexual range from 50,000 to over 100,000.) Now, of course, we have combined the triangle shape with the rainbow flag that shows our inclusiveness and diversity, and use it in pink, lavender, and black. (It's assumed that many of the "asocial" women were actually lesbians, who objected to being brood mares, so the Black Triangle has come to stand for Lesbian Pride.) In that spirit of remembrance, and "Turning our Scars into Stars," I offer some triangles to use on web pages. May we all learn to take pride in our accomplishments, and may we never forget.
