F'lar

This is one of the paintings I did for the book The People of Pern, published by Donning in 1988. Anne McCaffrey wrote character descriptions of everyone who had appeared in her books about the world of Pern, and I painted pictures and drew drawings to go with them, based on Anne's descriptions. The original is an oil painting on masonite.

F'lar is Lessa's mate, and as such is the Weyrleader of Benden weyr. His strengths compliment hers, as he was the one who discovered the patterns inherent in the fall of the deadly Thread, and so made it a simple thing to predict Fall, and to be on hand to destroy it. He also whipped the entire planet into a fighting force by the sheer strength of his personality!

Many years ago, at the start of my career, I did a series of character cards for the Mayfair Games Dragonriders of Pern game. One of the cards was a portrait of F'lar; and Anne liked it so much that I basically used the very same face for this picture. My over-one-door-and-up-one-floor neighbor, Zach, posed for the body. Thanks again, Zach!

We are also offering a large print edition of F'lar. It is also a photoprint, but it has an image area of roughly 18x24 inches (which makes it a touch larger than the original!) I am making them in a strictly limited edition of 25, also signed and numbered. They come bagged on a piece of foam-core as well, and are shipped flat, in a box. $150 + $5 shipping and handling.
